Well its finally here OA the stand alone addon for Arma2 and these are my first impressions of it . I have to admit im a little bit underwhealmed by it to be honest. First of all performance, it seems that it struggles to cope when units in any number are added to a map more so than Arma2 ie in the editor I added 4 groups of civis and a few empty cars and a player and my computer started to chugg a bit. admittedly this was in a town enviroment but even so it was disapointing to see. Bohemia have not been exactly generous with the number of new units they have given us either, given that the new enviroment means mostly infantry battles I think atmosphere is very important so some more sounds etc would have been nice. There is some very nice stuff in OA the thermal sights are very nice for instance and im sure that the modding comunity will very soon have some good addons but in truth OA feels like its just a collection of mods and addons that we had for Arma2. Having said all this it looks like im down on OA but im not. Its a great looking game perhaps i just expected too much. for example I want to fire my gun when sat outside the little bird. Foxholes, trenches, caves and tunnels would have been interesting to see. I guess this is my personal wish list so lets see what the future brings.

Agree with most of that. Hoping they'll bring out a few patches to improve the performance as that town map is almost unusable with more than about 20 units in it.

First off, I'm glad I can play it on my computer. Game play is good, haven't checked out to much of the island or the editor yet so not sure about the potential. I really like all the buildings being open that is the most realistic aspect I have found and been waiting years for. All in all, straight out of the box (with the 1 patch) I find it worth it. I am sure there is a lot we still need to learn about and things will improve so I give it a good 2 thumbs up.

Well its certainly proving very popular. On Sat we were inundated with players wanting to play OA our own computers and routers creaked and groaned a bit, mine gave up the ghost with 6-7 players connected, Zappers made a brave effort with i think 16-17 players connected . At this point in time there seems a lot of new players many of them dont have Arma2 just arrowhead and theyre just discovering this game. I think this is an arguement for keeping OA vanilla for a while when we get a OA server up and running. Oh and by the way I to love the open buildings, but I am begining to distrust Rocks. nasty deceitfull things that can swallow u up or pin you down, they also like to make you fall over and injure yourself.

I can only say one thing !! I love it !! Well i don't just play coop i also play warfare when i'm alone , maybe that's why i have a vision more large of the game !! I love the towns villages and the fact of being able to go anywhere in buildings and blow the crap out of them !!
Hmmm maybe i should make some screenshots of blowing buildings !!
Yahhh good stuff !!!

I noticed that headlights have an actual cone of light that affects whats in its path and not what is outside of it. It doesn't shine through walls but it does light them up, and the start point no longer comes from the lens but on the ground where the light first contacts a hard surface. I don't recall this in Arma2 and think it may have something to do with the advancement they made with thermal and laser lighting. Or is it a feature implemented by ACE?

In any case, I like the effect.
